Health Physics Technician
The Health Physics Technician position involves a wide range of responsibilities to support all facets of operation.
Responsibilities- Perform radiological surveys involving various instrumentation to monitor fixed and non-fixed contamination and radiation levels.
- Survey plant work areas, support areas, perimeter boundaries and the environment.
- Calibrate and perform daily quality control of handheld and laboratory instruments including automated gas flow proportional counting systems, liquid scintillation counters and gamma spectroscopy at select locations.
- Collect and analyze air samples at fixed and portable air sample locations.
- Collect and analyze water samples and assist in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment systems.
- Perform surveys to support the receipt and shipment of radioactive materials regulated as Hazardous Materials by the Department of Transportation.
- Utilize various software packages to input data, evaluate results of analysis, print and maintain reports.
- Calibrate and maintain specialized instrumentation including Automated Laundry Monitors (ALMs), personnel monitors, pipe monitors, respirator monitors, and a variety of specialized instrumentation manufactured for our specific needs.
- Package, sample, inventory, and maintain records of radioactive waste.
- Issue personnel, area, and environmental Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLDs) and Self Reading Personnel Dosimeters (SRPDs) and assist in the management of the dosimetry program.
- Perform personnel in-vivo bioassays (chest counts).
- Perform assays to release materials and equipment from radiological controls.
- Support plant operations and special projects.
- Associate’s degree in health physics or nuclear engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, or science curriculum.
- Practical experience in radiological safety.
- Able to perform the position responsibilities with reasonable accommodations.
- Computer proficiency:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, etc. - Ability to learn custom software.
- Shift work may be required.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and information.
- Proficiency in communication, verbally and in written reports.
- Language:
English required. Spanish and other languages are helpful. - Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to stand throughout an 8-hour shift.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Professional credential (or ability to achieve) desired:
National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT).
