Sumter County is Currently Seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator I.
Starting Wage: $30,000 (Based on Experience)
Position SummaryThe Heavy Equipment Operator I performs general maintenance and repair work within County right‑of‑ways, including roads, bridges, drainage systems, and surrounding areas. This position operates a variety of heavy and light equipment, supports infrastructure maintenance, and assists with emergency response efforts as needed. Reports to the Assistant Public Works Director.
Examples of Work Performed- Operate heavy and light equipment including motor graders, bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, and other machinery
- Perform road maintenance activities such as grading, asphalt repair, and right‑of‑way upkeep
- Maintain drainage systems, including ditches, storm drains, and catch basins
- Clear debris, remove trees, and maintain vegetation along roadways and medians
- Transport heavy equipment between job sites
- Assist with installation and maintenance of street signs
- Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment
- Complete and submit equipment maintenance and repair requests
- Direct traffic around work zones when necessary
- Follow all safety procedures while operating equipment and performing tasks
- Respond to emergency situations, including after‑hours or on‑call assignments
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Knowledge of road maintenance, construction, and public works operations
- Skill in operating and maintaining heavy equipment safely and efficiently
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to equipment operation
- Ability to perform minor equipment repairs and preventative maintenance
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently
- Strong attention to safety, detail, and quality of work
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
- Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete assigned tasks efficiently
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions
- High school diploma or GED
- One to two years of experience in road maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid South Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
- Ability to be on call for emergency response as needed
- Ability to successfully pass background check and drug screening
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Requires physical activity including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and operating heavy equipment
- Exposure to noise, dust, and potentially hazardous conditions
- May require lifting up to 100 pounds
- May be subject to emergency call‑out situations, including nights and weekends
