Road Technician I – Road Maintenance
The position is full‑time (40 hours weekly), non‑exempt. The purpose of this role is to operate heavy equipment for asphalt repairs and roadway paving, and to add stone or gravel to county dirt roads.
CompensationProjected Salary Range: $20.60 – $24.72 per hour, based on qualifications.

- Performs a variety of maintenance tasks using vehicles, heavy equipment and machinery.
- Operates heavy vehicles and equipment to load, haul or move materials, dirt, and debris; drives a truck to transport heavy equipment and required materials and tools to job sites.
- Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs of equipment, machinery, and tools; inspects equipment regularly for proper and safe operation.
- Sets up road construction sites to control traffic flow during work based on guidelines set by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, municipalities, counties, and contractors; may work as a traffic control flagman.
- Responds to after‑hours emergency calls as required; works on duty in inclement weather and on holidays when necessary.
- Assists workers in other County Departments and divisions with maintenance tasks as needed.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- High school graduation or GED equivalent.
- One year of operating construction heavy equipment or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid state CDL B with an acceptable driving history (Class A preferred).
- FEMA IC 100 and 200.
Medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects, and requires exertion of 20–50 pounds of force regularly and 50–100 pounds occasionally.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)- Bright/dim light; dust and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife.
- Vibration.
- Fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; moving machinery.
