Full-time (40 hours weekly), non-exempt Road Technician II to operate heavy equipment for asphalt repairs and roadway paving. Also repair and add stone or gravel to county dirt roads.

Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 112: $21.63 - $25.96 per hour, determined by qualifications.

Work Schedule: Responds to after-hours emergency calls as required; works on call for duty in inclement weather conditions and on holidays as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance tasks using vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery including grading and paving roads and parking lots, scraping roads, constructing and repairing bridges, constructing barricades, constructing convenience centers for garbage disposal, patching roads, mending fences, constructing and repairing sidewalks, installing asphalt or concrete, placing stone, landscaping, sowing grass and mowing grass on rights-of-way, cutting and removing trees and debris from rights-of-way, installing road signs, digging ditches, laying drainage pipes, hauling waste, etc.
  • Operate heavy vehicles and equipment to load, haul or move materials, dirt and debris; drive a truck to transport heavy equipment and required materials and tools to job sites.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs of equipment, machinery, and tools; inspect equipment regularly for proper and safe operating condition.
  • Set up road construction sites to control traffic flow during work based on guidelines set by S.C. Department of Transportation, municipalities, counties, and contractors. May work as traffic control flag man.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls as required; work on call for duty in inclement weather conditions and on holidays as necessary.
  • Assist workers in other County Departments and divisions with maintenance tasks as necessary.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

Minimum

Education and Experience:

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of operating construction heavy equipment or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state CDL A driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • CEPSCI = Storm Water maintenance (state issued).
  • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 552, 558, 700, and 800.

Physical Demands: Perform medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Involves routine and frequent exposure to: bright/dim light; dusts and pollen; extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions; extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife; vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors; traffic; moving machinery.
