Highway Maintenance Worker II - Bridge Crew Equipment Operator

Job Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including backhoe, mini excavator, lowboy truck tractor and trailer to repair bridge deficiencies.
• Operate medium equipment such as skid steer and tandem dump truck for construction, repair, and preservation of bridges on state highways.
• Perform grading, mowing, sweeping, and setting forms.
• Pour, finish, and pour/finish concrete.
• Cut, paint, and install steel sections.
• Use tools and equipment such as complex saws, hoists, power tools, measuring devices, and welders for bridge maintenance.
• Place traffic‑control devices to establish maintenance work zones per the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, which may require extended working hours or 12‑hour shifts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• One (1) year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Valid motor‑vehicle operator’s license required.
• Obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.
• Physical demands: bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping; able to lift up to 50 lbs.; walking for extended periods, traversing rough terrain, and working near motor traffic.
• May be required to work outside the normal scheduled work week and during inclement weather.
