Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Job Responsibilities
At Sumter Maintenance, performs diagnostic and repairs on equipment and vehicles, including electrical and mechanical systems, to ensure equipment is operational and production is maximized. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles in accordance with SCDOT PM policy. Repairs all trailers and maintains all equipment for the unit. Checks, adjusts, and repairs air brakes and components. Answers service calls in the field on equipment that is broken down.
Maintains shop and shop equipment for cleanliness and safety. Assists with welding repairs on equipment. Works shop operations during inclement weather and or emergencies.
- One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Completion of one academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience.
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
- Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
- Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time.
- May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
- Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
