Under general supervision of the Vehicle/Equipment Repair Supervisor, employee performs skilled mechanical duties in the maintenance and repair of Agency fleet and equipment and also maintains required documentation and drives a school bus as needed.

  • Repairs/replaces major component parts (alternator, hydraulics, hubs, brake shoes, etc.) by restoring components to OEM specs. Performs all funtions necessary to maintain fleet in excellent operating condition. Evaluates and diagnoses mechanical/electrical problems. Notifies supervisor of any major mechanical issues that are outside our scope.
  • Assists Vehicle/Equipment Repair Supervisor in ensuring compliance for Federal, State, Agency, and Departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations including but not limited to DHEC, DOE, DMV, DOT, State Fleet, etc.
  • Performs annual bus inspections per SDE requirements. Maintains documentation that indicates buses are inspected in a timely manner to meet the requirements of the SDE. Maintains proper credentials for inspecting buses. Attends required training sessions related to performing job duties.
  • Responds to on-call situations as needed. Uses best judgement in determining the best course of action. Ensures that all decisions are made in the best interest of the State and Agency with safety as the primary focus.

Three years of mechanical experience in automotive related repair or any combination of training and experience that would enable the employee to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for both gasoline and diesel engines. Maintains a current SC CDL, School Bus Certificate and DOT Card or is able to acquire these certifications within 120 calendar days of hire.

Must have a working knowledge of the mechanical repair of gasoline and diesel engines. Must possess or be able to acquire the necessary SDE certifications and ASE Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling certification. Requires the ability to perform all work in compliance with Federal, State, Agency, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures using personal protective equipment as required. Requires a working knowledge of supply procedures and the ability to interpret technical service manuals and/or software.
