Under direct supervision, Sex Offender Agent Trainee is expected to have a thorough understanding of the sex offender conditions, laws, restrictions and forms that are associated with the program. The role includes monitoring and documenting the enforcement of the condition of non‑sex offender supervision. The trainee must understand the South Carolina Sex Offender Registry requirements, proximity limitations on where offenders can live, work, and frequent, sex offender treatment processes, and the use of digital media.
Agents are also expected to identify red‑flag behaviors associated with re‑offending, understand the offense cycle of sex offenders to determine risk, and be familiar with various treatment methods to monitor progress.
A bachelor’s degree with at least 15 semester hours in social or behavioral science courses. An associate’s degree and two (2) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (including Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may be substituted; or a high school diploma and four (4) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (including Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may also be substituted.
Qualified applicants must obtain C-1 law enforcement certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy within one year of employment (twelve weeks, including an eight‑week sequestration at the academy).
Additional RequirementsApplicants will be selected after completing a series of tests and checks: the Nelson‑Denny Test (reading comprehension & vocabulary test), a physical ability test, a background check, a credit check, a cyber‑vetting check, driving records check, criminal records check, and a screening for illicit drugs. Candidates must also undergo a physical exam and a psychological exam.
Other ConditionsThis is an entirely on‑site, in‑office position. The department considers disciplinary actions during the interview phase.
