Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment such as slope mowers and backhoes daily to complete work requests and routine mowing activities.
- Perform maintenance tasks including clearing grass and small trees, removing large trees, cleaning bridge weep holes, hauling debris and traffic control signs, moving spoil materials, and removing trees, limbs, and weeds from around facilities and obstructions.
- Assist other maintenance crews with operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans.
- Assist in the placement of traffic control devices and flagging traffic in work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
- Conduct daily preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, ensuring proper lubrication, coolant and oil levels, hose and belt inspection, tire inflation, and no leakages.
- Conduct safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Track and record daily work performed, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used.
- Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations, including availability for extended 12‑hour shifts.
- Operate anti‑icing and removal equipment such as snow plows, sand and salt spreaders during snow and ice response on highways and bridges.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- One (1) year of related work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
- Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards may require work outside the normal scheduled work week, especially during inclement weather.
