Swing Refuse Driver

Role Description

The Swing Refuse Driver is a full‑time, on‑site role located in Sumter, SC, responsible for safely operating refuse collection trucks on assigned routes and covering various routes as needed. This role includes performing pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, reporting mechanical issues, and ensuring the vehicle is operated in compliance with company policies and applicable regulations. The driver will collect residential and/or commercial waste, operate hydraulic and lifting mechanisms, and ensure proper loading, compacting, and unloading of refuse at designated facilities.

Daily tasks also involve interacting professionally with customers and the public, responding to service‑related questions or concerns, and maintaining accurate route, load, and service records. The role requires adherence to safety procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and collaboration with dispatch, maintenance, and route supervisors to ensure timely and efficient service.

• Proficiency in truck driving with experience operating refuse or comparable commercial trucks safely and efficiently.
• Valid CDL Class A (or appropriate commercial driver’s license) with a clean driving record and knowledge of DOT regulations.
• Strong communication skills to interact clearly with dispatch, supervisors, and team members.
• Customer service skills to handle resident and commercial customer interactions in a professional, respectful manner.
• Ability to perform vehicle inspections, basic troubleshooting, and accurate completion of required logs and documentation.
• Commitment to safety, including the proper use of personal protective equipment, adherence to company and regulatory safety standards, and safe lifting and maneuvering practices.
• Reliability to work assigned schedules, including early mornings, possible weekends, holidays, and overtime when required.
• Physical ability to climb in and out of trucks, work in varying weather conditions, and perform tasks that may require bending, lifting, and extended periods of driving.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred; prior experience in waste management or related industries is a plus.
