Position: Highway Maintenance Worker II Heavy Equipment Operator (61033542)

Job Responsibilities

At Sumter Maintenance, operates heavy equipment such as excavator to perform complex repair work orders for sidewalks, curbs and gutters, catch basins, ada ramps, driveways, etc. Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader and low boy truck for complex concrete crew. Operates tandem dumb truck for hauling materials to and from the job site, such as asphalt, soil, pipe, debris and other construction materials.

Performs varied and complex maintenance activities when not on an active complex concrete project. Operates a standard dump truck with a snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists with other emergencies as needed.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
