Job Title:
Motor Equipment Operator II – Roads and Bridges Department
FLSA: NON-EXEMPT
Pickens County, South Carolina
The purpose of the class is to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment in the maintenance and/or construction of County roads, bridges and drainage structures; to maintain assigned equipment, and to perform other work as required.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment to excavate and compact earth, cut roadways and ditches, remove trees, grade land, build roads, load/unload materials, move/haul materials, install pipe, and perform other general or specialized functions of the Roads and Bridges Department.
- Use equipment such as mowers on the County right-of-way, dump truck, front-end loader, skid steer, snow plow, low-boy, tractor/trailer, backhoe, roller, bucket truck, sand spreader truck, forklift, wood chipper, and others.
- Manually load/unload materials onto vehicles; transport inmate workers, heavy equipment and tools to work sites.
- Remove debris, fallen trees, etc., from roadways and deliver to landfill; assist with snow and ice removal duties.
- Flag traffic to ensure crew safety as necessary.
- Use hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.
- Inspect equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; report defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
- Receive, unload and stock department supplies and materials after delivery.
- May provide training and leadership of lower-level operators and inmate workers as assigned.
- Perform all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
- Attend training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- High school diploma, GED equivalent, or specialized vocational training.
- Must possess a valid state CDL-B driver’s license; if not a Class B at hire, must obtain Class B within first six months.
- Over one year and up to two years of experience operating heavy equipment.
- Physical requirement: constant lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting 50–75 pounds of force recurrently and over 100 pounds frequently.
- Ability to work in bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat or cold, wet or humid conditions, high noise levels, vibration, fumes, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, and toxic/caustic chemicals.
- Normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth perception, texture perception, and color perception.
Employees must comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Follow safety training and instructions from the supervisor, wear and maintain required personal protective equipment, and report any unsafe work practices or conditions, or any on-the-job injury or illness, immediately.
