The Director of Nursing is responsible for the overall leadership and management of nursing services within the community, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centered care in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. This role oversees clinical staff recruitment, training, and development while fostering a culture of compassion, accountability, and teamwork. The Director of Nursing partners closely with physicians, department leaders, and frontline caregivers to maintain excellence in resident outcomes, survey readiness, and quality improvement initiatives.

Serving as both a clinical expert and organizational leader, the Director of Nursing ensures that nursing practices align with the mission and values of the community, while promoting resident dignity, safety, and satisfaction in a skilled nursing and senior living environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for implementation of the nursing process by all staff for all residents.
  • Become Acting Administrator in the absence of the Administrator.
  • To provide total resident care in the facility, which includes the following responsibilities:
  • Staffing the nursing department including hiring the nursing staff and 24-hour scheduling of the nursing staff to meet the needs of the residents and to meet all legal requirements.
  • Working with the Central Supply manager to ensure there are adequate nursing supplies available, keeping accurate inventory of nursing supplies as well as ordering supplies necessary to meet the needs of the residents while following budgetary guidelines.
  • Assisting with input for nursing budgets; gathering data for proper assessment of facility needs in relation to budget; meeting with the Administrator at least quarterly to review the assessment and make plans for possible changes.
  • Meeting nursing payroll and ancillary budgets.
    • Coordinating nursing services with other departments; reviewing care daily. Consider residents' needs and family requests. Inform other departments of residents' appointments and scheduled activities. Review facility services to insure their implementation.
  • Assisting the Administrator in the development of all facility policies and procedures, with special responsibility for nursing personnel job description; shift duties to correspond to job descriptions; staffing patterns-, all nursing policies; evaluation of old and new policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for participating in the screening prospective residents. Responsible for overseeing the coordination of admission and discharge of residents.
  • Supervising nursing personnel by evaluating all nursing personnel 's job performance and giving wage increases when appropriate and within budgetary guidelines.
  • Giving direction to all nursing personnel and providing instruction as needed; promoting nursing personnel.
  • Responsible for disciplinary action of nursing personnel.
  • Terminating nursing personnel according to facility policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for dealing with all nursing grievances that are departmental. If interdepartmental, then working in cooperation with the Administrator and other department supervisor (s) involved.
  • Leading the nursing department staff meetings.
  • Orienting and training of all nursing personnel
  • Developing family and community involvement.
  • Developing and maintaining a good working relationship with Federal, State and local agencies and with physicians.
  • Comply with Federal, State and local laws as well as facility policies and procedures.
