Summary/Objective
We are seeking a CAD Technician to support subsurface utility mapping, pothole investigations, and permitting efforts. This role focuses on working within client-provided CAD files and ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys to assist in the preparation of pothole permit exhibits and utility-related plan sets. This position is ideal for someone looking to build a technical career in utility mapping, civil drafting, or Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE).
Training and mentorship are provided, with clear opportunities for growth as skills develop.
- Assist with creating and editing CAD drawings related to subsurface utilities and pothole investigations
- Utilize client-provided CAD files as base drawings while maintaining file integrity and standards
- Interpret ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys to identify boundaries, easements, rights-of-way, and control
- Create pothole permit maps and exhibits showing proposed pothole locations, limits of work, and relevant site features
- Import, organize, and manage external CAD files, Xrefs, and survey data
- Apply company and client drafting standards (layers, linetypes, blocks, symbols, annotations)
- Update drawings based on plans, field sketches, utility markouts, and client feedback
- Prepare clear, legible, submission-ready exhibits for municipalities, agencies, and private owners
- Maintain organized project folders and clean CAD file structure
- Communicate with project staff to clarify scope, base file content, and permitting requirements
- Basic experience with AutoCAD (AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Civil 3D, Micro Station or similar)
- Ability to work within existing CAD files provided by clients or consultants
- General understanding of drawing scale, layouts, and plotting
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow drafting standards
- Willingness to learn survey interpretation and utility mapping concepts
- Good communication skills and ability to ask questions when requirements are unclear
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Coursework or certification in CAD, drafting, surveying, GIS, or civil engineering
- Familiarity with ALTA/NSPS surveys, boundary surveys, or civil base files
- Experience with Xrefs, blocks, layers, and layouts
- Exposure to potholing, utility locating, 811 tickets, or utility plan sets
- Basic understanding of permitting exhibits or right-of-way drawings
As skills develop, this role may expand to include:
- Independent preparation of pothole permit exhibits and utility plans
- Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) drafting and data integration
- Coordination with field crews, surveyors, and project managers
- QA/QC review of CAD deliverables
- Increased client-facing and permitting responsibilities
