Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Landscaping Supervisor, performs custodial and maintenance duties for grounds, pools and street landscaping. Performs semi-skilled work that is generally routine and repetitive in nature and follows an established pattern.
Brief Overview Of Major Duties
- Cuts lawns, using mower; trims and edges around walkways, flower beds, and walls.
- Cleans grounds and removes litter from walkways, streets, and patios.
- May repair fences, gates, walls and walkways, using carpentry and masonry tools.
- Maintain clean drainage ditches and culverts.
- Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs, using shears, pruner, or chain saw.
- Sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.
- Operates and performs maintenance on power lawn mowers, spreader, edger, weed cutter and street sweeper such as changing oil, adjusting and lubricating parts.
- Performs irrigation techniques using sprinklers, hoses and flooding methods. Troubleshoots and makes necessary repairs to the sprinkler system as needed.
- Digs up ground for flower beds, ditches, and holes for sign posts.
- May operate equipment such as street sweeper equipment.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Will be required to operate/drive a golf cart and other equipment for the purpose of transporting supplies around campus as needed. This may also include transporting employees, residents and/or guests when needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Has knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the landscaping trade.
- Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in the landscaping trade.
- Preferably has knowledge on using iPad. Training will be provided.
- Has ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures
- Is organized, able to multi-task, think creatively and adapt to different situations.
- Must be able to complete training on computer and/or other devices.
- Maintain competency in the position and knowledge of trade/industry advances and new technologies.
- Must be able to effectively communicate in English with all levels of staff, residents, and guests.
- Preferably has a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Preferably has one year of experience in the landscaping trade.
- Has a current, valid driver’s license. Driving record must meet the criteria set forth by Royal Oaks’ insurance carrier.
- If applicable, has a Certificate of Completion for memory care services training or obtains within 30 days of hire and complies with annual certification requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Is able to carry/lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds.
- May need to operate a fire extinguisher.
- Is able to assist in evacuation procedures.
- Physical: climbing to include legs and arms, kneeling, lifting/moving, carrying/transporting, walking/traversing or moving, standing/stationary position, bending, reaching to include forward and above shoulder level, pulling, pushing, gross/total manipulation (firms hand grasping), twisting, stooping, crawling
- Cognitive: direct other, written and oral communication, work under time constraints, concentrate amid distractions, math/calculations, ensure accuracy of details, creativity, remember names & details, problem solve, make decisions, work rapidly, examine/observe details, analytical ability, work within minimal errors, reason (make sense of things)
- Environmental: inside, outside, humid, toxic or caustic chemicals, high places, hot, cold, dry, wet, change of temperature, dirty, dusty, odors, fumes, loud (equipment, surroundings), near moving mechanical parts, vibrations, working with others, working, around others, working alone
