Head Start Family And Health Coordinator

Job Location:

Sunbury Children's Center, 600 Arch Street, Sunbury, PA.

Organizational Relationships:
The Head Start Family and Health Coordinator reports to the Head Start/Early Head Start Family and Health Team Supervisor and in their absence, to the Head Start Programs Manager.

Job Definition:
The Head Start Family and Health Coordinator's main responsibilities are to facilitate relationships between the home, the parents, and community agencies in the areas of health, nutrition and social services and to coordinate enrollment activities to maintain full enrollment in the Head Start program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Social Services

  • Be familiar with current Head Start regulations, policies and legislation in the fields of social services, parent involvement, health and nutrition.
  • Organize and coordinate parent/family participation through parent meetings, Policy Council, committee meetings, trainings and other Head Start related activities.
  • Acquaint staff and parents with existing network of social service agencies, and help families locate needed services.
  • Identify needs as expressed by the family, make appropriate referrals, complete necessary records and follow-up.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies as needed.
  • Attend trainings as required.

Health

  • Assist parents in obtaining required health and dental records for individual children.
  • Coordinate, and implement sensory and other health screenings for children.
  • Attend and facilitate parent participation in the Bi-annual Health Advisory Meeting (HAC).
  • Coordinate transportation for health services.

Enrollment

  • Establish and maintain an outreach recruitment process, which systematically ensures enrollment of eligible children.
  • Verify income documentation in order to determine program eligibility.
  • Fill enrollment vacancies as quickly as possible: always within 30 days of the vacancy occurring.
  • Follow all federal regulations related to ERSEA (Eligibility, Recruitment, Selection, Enrollment and Attendance).
  • Monitor classroom attendance and work with families to eliminate barriers to regular attendance for all children.

- Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to substitute in the Head Start classrooms as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or designee.

Education, Experience, and

Skills Required:

  • Minimum requirement includes either:
    • Bachelor's degree in social work, human services, family services, counseling or a related field;
    • Associate degree social work, human services, family services, counseling or a related field and minimum two (2) years relevant full time experience.
  • Must have an interest in and concern for children and their families.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff members, children and their families and community representatives.
  • Ability to accept great cultural diversity, flexibility to accommodate a changing caseload, ability to cope with stressful situations, and a professional attitude are required.
  • Must be willing to learn to operate the machines used for screening purposes. Bi-lingual in Spanish and English preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize the task based on project deadlines. And must be able to type accurately and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Requires the ability to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and to remain calm in unpredictable situations.
  • Adept at using virtual meeting platforms such as Skype, Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

Additional Eligibility

Qualifications:

  • Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).
  • Current, approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours training every five (5) years.

Professional Development Requirements:

  • This position is required to keep abreast of current trends relating to social, human or family services. Additionally, they must attend regularly scheduled full staff meetings, participate in local and state training that is pertinent to their job assignment and participate in Head Start initiatives and CSIU sponsored activities.
  • Continued training in First Aid is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to assist children with self-help skills and tolerate considerable bending, stooping, and squatting.
  • Sedentary:
    Able to sit for extended periods of time, occasional walking, standing (as necessary) and able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Dexterity:
    Finger movements (computer keyboard, calculator), eye-hand coordination (office equipment, etc.).
  • Audio-Visual Requirements:
    Within normal range with or without correction.
  • Is able to move throughout all buildings, floors and grounds including negotiating stairs and rough terrain at centers and homes.
