- Assumes full responsibility for processing payroll in its entirety during the Deputy Director’s absence, including payroll preparation, verification, calculation, tax, and deduction processing, compliance and reporting.
- Serves as the designated backup for the Deputy Director for Payroll and Accounts Payable.
- Manages and oversees the daily functions of the Payroll and Benefits office and assists with all essential duties of the Payroll and Benefits Specialist.
- Processes EPARS for new hires, payroll changes, and employee terminations; accurately enters and maintains all personnel and payroll changes in the Accounting Software (School ERP Pro).
- Manages new hire orientations.
- Reviews and investigates leave status of employees on various leave programs; processes disability claims and makes pay adjustments based on leave balances.
- Monitors and reports to the NMPSIA online system with employee leave status.
- Assists in ensuring timely completion and submission of all payroll tax reporting requirements.
- Prepares and reconciles all payroll reports, including but not limited to:
New Mexico Public School Insurance Authority, Affordable Care Act reporting, New Mexico Retirement Health Care Authority, New Mexico Employee Retirement Board, New Mexico State Tax, and Federal, State, Annual, and Quarterly Payroll Reporting. - Collects and analyzes data, exercising sound judgment in arriving at proper conclusions.
- Interprets IRS regulations for tax procedures and processing.
- Anticipates and informs the supervisor of potential issues, risks, and developments in a timely manner.
- Maintains accurate and detailed records of all communications, updates, and reports for easy access and reference.
- Collaborates with other departments to build and maintain strong working relationships and achieve district goals.
- Attends training, conferences, workshops, etc., as appropriate, to enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.

Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications- Comprehensive knowledge of FLSA and other government regulations governing pay.
- Good customer relations skills.
- Ability to handle multi‑tasks and make numerous decisions on a daily basis, with varying levels of complexity.
- Proficient knowledge of standard office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and internet browsers.
- Strong communication skills, capable of communicating timely and clearly.
- Comprehensive knowledge of payroll functions, including tax reporting and accounting practices.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Five (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in payroll and/or benefits.
New Mexico Business License or eligibility for license.
Technology Skills- Ability to use multiple virtual instructional platforms.
- Proficient in Google Suites.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites.
- Experience with online meeting platforms such as Google Meets, Zoom, and MS Teams.
