Instructional Coach

Executive Director of Teaching & Learning and Building Principal

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Instructional Coach is a teacher who has both content and instructional expertise particularly in English language arts and math. The Instructional Coach facilitates the district's professional development by providing training that builds teachers capacity in ELA and mathematics: demonstrating lessons, observing classroom instruction, and coaching teachers one-on-one. The Instructional Coach focuses on enhancing teacher ability to provide instruction that (1) builds student understanding and skills, (2) is academically rigorous, (3) addresses the curriculum standards and assessments, and (4) enhances student sense of engagement in and ownership of learning.

The Instructional Coach will embed the ELD standards and the technology standards in their training.

The Instructional Coach builds teacher understanding of the standards and assessments by providing quality professional development and coaching. Together with administrators and classroom teachers, the Instructional Coach designs standards-based, high-quality instruction. The Instructional Coaches support the alignment of district and building goals and help teachers evaluate student data in support of instructional planning. The Instructional Coach works collaboratively with other instructional leaders to design and deliver professional development that aligns with the district and building vision.

As a member of a professional coaching community, the Instructional Coach participates in professional development and inquiry into his or her own instructional leadership practice. Instructional coaches will be involved in building their leadership and content knowledge.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
  • Implement a collaborative coaching and learning approach.
  • Curriculum:
    Assist teachers in developing and deepening their understanding of
  • ELA and Math CCSS. Assist teachers with unit-building/curriculum guide

    development and support
  • Assist new teachers, in a collaborative model of observation, conversation, and lesson demonstration, to analyze and reflect on their practice to promote quality instructional practices.
  • Instruction:
    Frequently in classrooms as a support for teachers. Observe instruction
  • and provide feedback based on the District adopted Instructional Framework. Model

    curriculum, pedagogy and student engagement based on the District adopted

    Instructional Framework.
  • Assessment:
    Support teachers in the use of assessments aligned with items specifications. Lead the analysis of interim/block assessment data.
  • Model effective, differentiated instruction.
  • Provide individualized, classroom-based coaching with participants to support them in implementing good instructional practices.
  • Embed the ELD standards and the technology standards when applicable.
  • Facilitate professional collaborative groups among teachers in which issues related to implementing effective content instruction are considered, current research and writing on effective practice is read and discussed, engaging lessons are planned, and student work and data are reviewed to inform instruction.
  • Facilitate grade-level teams among teachers in which issues related to implementing effective content, skills and problem solving instruction are considered, current research and writing on effective practice is read and discussed, and student work and data are reviewed.
  • Provide comprehensive/balanced training in and across given subject areas and curricular areas.
  • Participate fully in professional development for coaches, including peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions.
  • Assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.
