Job DescriptionEmployees in this job classification are directly involved in helping students achieve their maximum potential through the instructional program.
Primary PurposeResponsibilities include one-to-one instruction, small group instruction, in and out of classroom supervision, and general assistance to the teacher.
Essential Functions- Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on individual student needs.
- Maintains records and charts indicating students’ progress and attendance.
- Provides students practice in identified skill areas.
- Assists students in understanding instruction concepts.
- Guides independent work.
- Informs classroom teacher of students’ progress or concerns.
- Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.
- Performs regular sanitation of classroom manipulatives, tables, etc.
- Serves as chief source of information and help for substitute teachers.
- Provides positive behavioral support, implements consequences for inappropriate behavior, communicates and implements student discipline plans, evaluates students’ needs, provides interventions to redirect behavior, assesses crisis situations, and intervenes to defuse situations using conflict resolution.
- Assists in monitoring student behavior and disciplines students as authorized.
- Restraints a student from harming self or others.
- Assists with supervision of students inside and outside.
- Assists with bulletin board and other classroom learning displays.
- Assists with large group activities.
- Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines (Elementary level).
- Assists with wash-up and toilet routines (Elementary level).
- Maintains high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information as expected of licensed teachers.
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the efficient functioning of the work unit.
Communicates regularly and positively with students, parents/guardians, instructional and support staff. Deals with a wide range of student behaviors and disabilities.
Working ConditionsWork performed primarily in a classroom setting, may be required outdoors in inclement weather, potential exposure to infectious diseases, noise, and physical contact with students.
QualificationsEducation: Proof of high school diploma or G.E.D. required. Pass state assessment for para educators, or associate degree or higher, or 72-quarter college credits or 48-semester credits at one hundred level or higher, or completed apprenticeship as a para educator in a program registered with Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.

Licenses / Special Requirements: Valid Washington State driver’s license or photo ;
Social Security Card; WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance; fundamental course of study to be obtained within first 4 months.
