JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Bus Driver
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
UNIT CLASSIFICATION: PSE Transportation
PRIMARY
PURPOSE:
This position safely operates school buses under all types of weather conditions, including fog, rain, sleet, snow, and ice. Responsibilities include transporting students and other authorized persons over regular routes and on field, co-curricular, and special or extra activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Drives school bus on scheduled routes and/or on trips in support of district-approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries.
- Operates and services all school bus equipment and accessories (e.g., fire extinguishers, safety kits, chains, etc.).
- Pre-trip and post-trip inspections; assist with cleaning the bus interior and exterior.
- Maintain control of student passengers related to safety and behavior; report unsafe actions or conditions; confer with parents when necessary.
- Fuel buses.
- Complete required driver training programs as established by the State and the district.
- Complete legible forms, records, timesheets, trip requests, route studies, reports, and other clerical duties as required.
- Operate all bus controls in accordance with Washington State requirements and district policies.
- Perform required operational and safety inspections of the bus and related equipment.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Perform basic first aid and CPR as appropriate.
- Perform other bus driver-related duties as assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the general public.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The majority of time is spent operating a school bus and waiting between runs, with exposure to inclement weather and traffic. The driver uses standard safety equipment such as a fire extinguisher and first aid kit. Potential exposures include chemical, diesel, grease and oil fumes, fuel, blood-borne pathogens, inclement weather, and heavy traffic patterns.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
- High school graduation or equivalent; reading, writing, and communication skills required.
- Previous commercial or bus driving experience preferred.
- Successful completion of the WSP and FBI criminal background checks.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Above-average knowledge and skill of equipment operation.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn district area and routes.
- Knowledge of district policies and transportation procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly with students, parents, staff, and the public.
- Sufficient strength to assist ill or physically impaired students.
- Excellent hearing and vision capabilities.
Licenses/Special Requirements
- Valid Washington State driver’s license with required bus driver endorsements.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Social Security Card.
- WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
- Physical examination certifying medical ability to drive a school bus.
- School bus driver’s certificate.
- Driving abstract from Department of Licensing.
- Completion of district-provided bus driver training programs.
- First aid and CPR training as required by the district.
- Completion of School Bus Driver Annual Disclosure Form.
