Hardware Engineering Intern

This role has been designed as ‘Hybrid’ with an expectation that you will work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.

Job Description:

Job Family Definition:
Assists in various tasks aligned with their field of study, including research, collaboration on team initiatives and projects, problem‑solving, and creative thinking to gain hands‑on experience and develop professional skills. Includes internships, research roles, visiting scholar positions, or other program‑related opportunities.

Responsibilities:
  • Support senior team members on assigned technical projects as determined by the business unit.
  • Help identify and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Actively provide hands‑on support in the lab for hardware quality initiatives and suggest solutions.
  • Interface with cross‑functional teams during the product development cycle.
  • Engage in learning about new technologies and methodologies relevant to work.
  • Fulfill tasks and responsibilities assigned by a supervisor in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Participate in periodic reviews to share updates and incorporate feedback on assigned projects/initiatives.
Education & Experience:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Solid experience and proficiency with electrical circuit design, schematic design, and schematic capture tools. Clear proficiency with multiple aspects of hardware design, which may include digital logic design, CPU subsystem design, clocks, signal integrity, power delivery, and analog components.
  • Experience with board design layout and familiarity with multi‑layer board considerations.
  • Team project experience outside of coursework.
  • Hands‑on experience testing L2/L3 products with Ethernet packet generators.
Knowledge &

Skills:
  • Passion for building hardware projects and solving challenging problems.
  • Skilled debugging capability and intrinsically curious about how things work.
  • Understanding of how PCIe, Ethernet, I2C, and high‑speed Ser Des work at the hardware level.
  • Capable scripting skills using Python.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self‑motivated team player, capable of working in a fast‑paced R&D environment.
  • Understanding of Ethernet routing and switching.
  • Familiarity with FPGAs and Verilog.
  • Comfortable in a Unix/Linux environment.
Impact/Scope:
  • University students actively enrolled in a university/college/institution pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a technical area of study, who typically work during school breaks and then return to their university. While this applies to most interns, there may be opportunities for full‑time students to work as part‑time interns during the school year in some countries.

Additional skills are welcomed and may include but are not limited to advanced knowledge of digital signal processing, high‑speed interconnect design, and experience with multidisciplinary team collaboration tools.
