Hardware Engineer - Optics
Location:
Sunnyvale, CA (hybrid, up to 3 days in the lab).
HPE Networking seeks an experienced Optical Hardware Engineer to join the Optical Engineering team, responsible for 100G/400G/800G/1.6T pluggable optical/electrical transceiver and cable assembly interconnects, including module level specifications and test verification across HPE’s switching, routing, and security platforms.
Responsibilities- Develop specifications and requirements for pluggable optical/electrical transceiver and cable assemblies based on industry standards and MSAs (IEEE, OIF, SNIA SFF).
- Engage with optics transceiver vendors on HPE’s optics specifications and requirements.
- Create optics module test plans and build test stations using optical and electrical test equipment.
- Develop test automation software to execute tests and store results in a database.
- Conduct performance characterization and qualification tests.
- Develop software to process data and distill results, generating test reports.
- Collaborate with Signal Integrity, System Hardware, and Software engineering teams for optics integration in routing, switching, and security systems.
- Support HPE Customer Service teams with pluggable optics failure root cause analysis.
- Support external optics certification and interoperability with 3rd party networking equipment.
- Bachelor’s Degree and at least 5 years of optical transceiver module specification and test experience.
- Experience in hardware board design is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated knowledge of 100G/400G/800G module testing per current optical IEEE standards and MSA specifications.
- Comprehensive knowledge of optical equipment, electrical equipment, and automation software used in testing of optical modules and interfaces.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to present test results clearly.
