PUBLIC SAFETY CADET Casual (Part‑Time) Positions — 25 hours per week

Note:

Casual non‑benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty‑five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

Student Status

Required:

Candidates must be currently enrolled as a college student with a minimum course load of six units per semester or ten units per quarter.

Under supervision, the Cadet performs clerical duties, assists with public safety training program(s), and completes errands and other similar duties within the Department of Public Safety. The position may involve lifting, loading, and moving heavy items.

The position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping during daily activities. It also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination when using a computer keyboard. Near‑ and far‑vision is needed to read reports and work‑related documents. The Cadet must have acute hearing for telephone and personal customer service. Lifting, dragging, and pushing files, paper, books, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds is also required.

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must be currently enrolled full‑time or part‑time in a Community College or University (6 semester units or 10 quarter units).
• Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
• Ability to act in a courteous and effective manner when dealing with the general public by telephone and in person.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to read, write, spell, and speak clearly in English.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation (polygraph, credit history, driving record, criminal activity, military and employment records, and character references) in accordance with the minimum standards of the California POST Commission.
• Willingness to abide by the Public Safety Cadet Code of Ethics.
• Willingness to wear a department‑issued uniform.
• Willingness to work up to 20 hours per week, including some weekends and evenings.

Possession at the time of hire and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver’s license and a safe driving record.
