Job Description
The R&D Technician will be responsible for supporting the R&D, Operations, and Quality departments with various activities and projects to meet the company's objectives and key initiatives. This position is located in Sunnyvale, CA and reports to the R&D Manager.
Key Responsibilities- Manage R&D laboratory equipment, calibration, and supplies.
- Fabricate and assemble prototypes to support new product development.
- Execute laboratory testing and document results.
- Operate and maintain 3D printers (Prusa, Markforged, Bambu).
- Prepare and ship product training materials for field training events.
- Inspect, test, and service (including upgrading) capital equipment.
- Support general site-related Fed Ex shipping and receiving.
- Organize lab supplies, develop processes to ensure visibility and traceability of supply levels, and set up replenishment systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance on lab equipment and coordinate calibration activities.
- Document materials and processes of prototypes and devices made for testing.
- Troubleshoot and suggest creative solutions to process or design issues.
- Assist with developing manufacturing and test processes and fixtures.
- Conduct laboratory testing on prototypes, developmental devices, and commercial products, maintaining accurate lab notebooks and records.
- Update engineers on work status or problems with recommendations for improvement.
- Oversee and operate the 3D printer farm, performing maintenance and managing consumable inventory.
- Process commercial shipments to customers per SOPs, creating shipping paperwork and logs.
- Coordinate product shipment logistics with field sales and customer account representatives.
- Maintain and organize local supply status of commercial products and training materials, triggering replenishment as needed.
- Prepare product samples for demos and field training events.
- Collaborate with engineers to document and resolve product complaint investigations.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized work area.
- Support company goals, policy, QA, and FDA regulations.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a technical support role developing, building, testing, and servicing medical devices. Education or certification may substitute for work experience.
- Experience with mechanical device fabrication, equipment, and assembly.
- Experience with general laboratory tools and instrumentation (microscope, calipers, digital multimeter).
- Experience with design verification testing and test methods.
- Experience with mechanical test equipment such as Mark-10, Instron, Shimadzu, and MTS test frames.
- Experience with root cause analysis and troubleshooting product issues from the field.
- Experience with metals including Nitinol and polymers.
- Experience with 3D printers (FDM).
- Ability to understand engineering drawings and documentation.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Capacity to work in a high‑paced, changing environment and interface effectively with others.
- High proficiency using MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint.
- Outstanding attention to detail and understanding of good documentation practices.
- Ability to work on problems requiring autonomy, judgment, and expertise.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs on occasion.
2-year associate degree preferred, but not required.
