Overview
We are looking for an experienced international trade and export control professional to join the Legal team. You will be the first in-house dedicated trade compliance subject matter expert. The role is based in Sunnyvale, CA, and you will support our dual-use Defense and Commercial business lines worldwide.
At Applied, You Will- Manage the company’s Trade Compliance Policy and Technology Control Plans
- Manage Restricted Party Screening processes
- Make export jurisdiction and classification determinations
- Lead trade compliance training across the company
- Provide strategic advice to Product, Business Development, and Engineering teams throughout the product development, sales, and project delivery lifecycle
- Work cross-functionally with Security to advise on controls to secure data, software, and hardware
- Assist the Procurement and Engineering teams with navigating import/export customs processes for cross-border shipments
- Perform internal compliance assessments
- Submit export license and export classification applications to regulators (e.g., DDTC, BIS)
- Oversee relationships with external legal counsel, external trade compliance and customs consultants, and regulators
- 5+ years of experience working on international trade controls
- Experience applying international trade controls in contexts involving software and/or hardware for military customers or automotive industry OEMs
- Experience designing and implementing compliance policies
- Experience with HTS classification and import entry review, including oversight of customs brokers and freight forwarders
- Expertise in U.S. export controls (ITAR, EAR)
- Familiarity with global sanctions regimes (U.S. and UK)
- Familiarity with licensing and compliance IT systems (e.g., DECCS, SNAP-R, OCR)
- Familiarity with U.S. import duty regimes (e.g., Section 301)
- Self-starter mentality; able to operate in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- Active U.S. security clearance or the ability to obtain one
- Familiarity with import/export customs procedures and coordinating with freight forwarders
- Familiarity with international trade controls applicable to operations in the UK, Europe, and/or APAC
- Experience in the aerospace or automotive industry
- Experience at a large defense contractor, dual-use tech company, or a consulting firm serving such clients
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance

Compensation and BenefitsCompensation includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Base salary is accompanied by additional components such as equity, health and welfare benefits, 401(k) with employer match, learning and wellness stipends, and paid time off. Benefits are subject to change and may vary by jurisdiction. The base salary range for this position is listed as $160,000 - $210,000 USD annually. The final offer depends on experience, credentials, and other factors related to the role.
