Position: Maintenance Worker 2 - Water Distribution & Sewer/Storm

Position Title

Regular, Full‑Time Maintenance Worker 2, Water Distribution Division (4) | Sewer and Storm Division (1) – Environmental Services Department, City of Sunnyvale.

Responsibilities

The Maintenance Worker 2 performs a broad range of duties in basic construction and maintenance trades.

Responsibilities include:

  • Operate pickups and trucks, load and unload materials, and transport maintenance supplies.
  • Place traffic control devices, direct traffic, and enforce safety around work sites.
  • Use hand and power tools (brooms, shovels, ladders, hammers, screwdrivers, drills, chainsaws, concrete saws, pipe cutters, etc.).
  • Operate equipment such as air compressors, pneumatic hammers, chain saws, concrete saws, sprayers, compactors, forklifts, painting equipment, rollers, and, on an irregular basis, backhoes, front‑end loaders, and trucks.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair of hand and power tools.
  • Respond courteously to public inquiries and maintain a safe operation of all equipment.
  • Maintain records, prepare material requests, and prepare written logs as directed.
  • Lead and train a small crew of trainees or temporary workers under supervision.
Specific Duties
  • Water Distribution Section (General Duties)
    • Install, connect, relocate, and replace water mains, service lines, valves, pumps, meters, meter boxes, and fire hydrants; cut and fit pipes and make taps.
    • Repair leaks on water mains by installing new pipe or clamps.
    • Locate and mark existing water mains, meters, valves using sonic or magnetic pipe locators.
    • Notify customers of shut‑downs and record valve locations.
    • Operate hydraulic equipment to exercise valves, record openings, and test water flow.
    • Flush water system, test turbidity and chlorine residual, check for leakage.
    • Paint valves, pumps, piping, and building interiors/exteriors.
    • Remove vegetation, clean meters and vaults, replace meters, open and close valves, and maintain pump stations, generators, storage tanks and associated sites.
  • Sewer and Storm Section (General Duties)
    • Perform construction, repair, cleaning, and inspection work—including rodding, hydroflush cleaning, television camera inspection, locating, and new pipe underground construction.
    • Operate loaders, pumps/compressors, and heavy‑duty trucks; set up and operate rodding, hydrovac, locating, and CCTV equipment.
    • Repair, replace, and install structures such as manholes, cleanouts, and pressure‑relief valves.
    • Calibrate, test, and operate air‑monitoring devices.
    • Handle potential biohazard exposure and environmental cleanup, mitigate sewer spills.
    • Read and interpret maps and develop understanding of underground utilities.
    • Work outdoors in varied weather and terrain, including exposure to poison oak, insects, and pathogens.
  • Working Conditions

    The position requires physical activities such as sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and repetitive hand movements. You must be able to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies up to 70 pounds. Operations are conducted in all weather conditions and may involve exposure to fumes, dust, chemicals, biohazards, loud noise, confined spaces, ladders, and heavy vehicle traffic.

    Education and Experience

    Minimum qualifications:

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Six months of experience comparable to the City of Sunnyvale Maintenance Worker I classification.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Basic knowledge of hand tools and their proper use and care.
    • Ability to safely perform heavy manual labor and learn operation of power tools.
    • Ability to learn handling of toxic materials, follow oral and written instructions, work effectively as a crew member, and act courteously with the public.
    • Willingness to wear a uniform.
    • Understanding of water and sewer system maintenance techniques, equipment, safety procedures, and underground service alert procedures.
