What You'll Do
A lab signs with Core Weave and has thousands of GPUs waiting, yet the first month is spent on cluster setup and operations instead of research. We are building the Applied Training team to fix this problem.
In this role you will- Contribute to the roadmap for Applied Training – identify what unlocks new workloads and what is merely nice to have.
- Work directly and closely with customers and other Core Weave teams building cloud‑native primitives: compute, storage, networking, etc.
- Design and build a complete research cluster experience—including a CLI, job configuration schema, Kubernetes operators, daemons—to address researcher pain points such as code distribution, checkpoint‑triggered evaluation, cross‑cluster scheduling, and programmatic job control.
- Own the Python SDK for sandbox infrastructure, working iteratively with the backend team to enable RL training runs that spawn thousands of isolated containers for agent rollouts and benchmarks at scale.
- Write documentation for running popular OSS training frameworks on Core Weave to unblock customers and help them succeed.
- Collaborate with infrastructure teams and customers—the large AI labs running thousands of GPUs—to understand their supercomputing stacks and feed that knowledge back into our designs.
- 8‑12+ years of experience building distributed systems, ML infrastructure, or developer platforms.
- Real Kubernetes experience: custom controllers, operators, scheduling, CRDs, and workload orchestration at scale—not just deployment or administration.
- A deep understanding of researcher productivity needs: code distribution, fast iteration cycles, and workflows that do not require becoming infrastructure experts.
- Familiarity with training orchestration—how distributed jobs get scheduled, rank initialization, and common scalability issues.
- Proven track record of shipping production infrastructure that others rely on daily.
- Strong communication skills, able to work with customers and translate their complaints into system designs.
- Experience building internal ML platforms or research clusters at a company that does large‑scale training.
- Familiarity with agentic AI: RL training with rollouts, agent evaluation, sandbox isolation for running untrusted code.
- Background with Slurm, Ray, or similar workload orchestration and opinions on their strengths and shortcomings.
- Experience with container runtimes, isolation (gVisor, Kata), or serverless platforms.
- OSS contributions to Kubernetes SIGs, Ray, PyTorch, or similar.
The base salary range for this role is $182,000 – $242,000. The starting salary will be determined based on job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location.
