Upward Bound Director

Type of Appointment: Temporary, residential - 6 weeks

Salary: $3000 ($11.25/hourly rate, $12.25 hourly rate effective 6/28 due to campus-wide wage increase for student employees)

Position Summary:

The Upward Bound Resident Assistant (RA) is a temporary residential position offering supervision and advisement to high school students during the TRIO Upward Bound Summer Program. This is a residential position. UB is a federally funded program that prepares high school students to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. The 6-week summer program focuses on enhancing the academic skills and personal growth of participants.

The primary objectives of the RA position are to ensure the well-being of program members (grades 9-12) regarding health, safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships, and academics during the residential portion of the UB Summer Program. RAs are expected to reside in assigned campus housing. (Weekend housing may be available if needed during off-duty times.)

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with Upward Bound students, mentoring them on academic, personal, social, and college/career concerns.
  • Maintain a positive and safe environment in the residence halls.
  • Plan, lead, implement, and participate in free-time structured activities for students.
  • Assist in supervision of participants at recreation, co-curricular activities, and meals.
  • Provide academic assistance, tutoring, and mentoring to students in classroom settings.
  • Assist in monitoring students' arrival on Sundays and departure on Fridays.
  • Maintain student confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Assist in handling and/or referring disciplinary issues to the appropriate staff
  • Maintain and enforce program rules and expectations found in the UWS Upward Bound Summer Staff Handbook.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Participate in pre-summer program staff training.
  • Resident Assistants are required to live in the residence hall alongside UB participants.
  • Complete documentation and reports, as assigned.
  • Required:

    occasional sitting and frequently walking up to a mile or more. Most of the work performed is indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Will be expected to work outdoors in summer conditions.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.
Qualifications - Education, Experience, &

Skills:

  • Applicants must be an active college student, a recent college graduate, or a graduate student, who can tutor and mentor high schoolers.
  • This position requires a positive attitude and the ability to collaborate with individuals from a range of ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Teamwork and leadership skills are essential.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with low-income and first-generation students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Prior resident assistant or camp counselor experience.
    • Special consideration will be given to former students of TRIO programs.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to follow directions, complete assigned projects with minimal supervision, prioritize tasks, maintain accurate records and files, complete tasks under deadlines, and analyze/resolve complex problems.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and behave according to the college's mission, goals, and values.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to cope with stressful circumstances.
  • Exhibit a willingness to assume additional duties.
