Position Title

Student Researcher Level II – Student – Hourly – $12.00/hour

Location & Schedule

Lake Superior Research Institute, Old Main 302. Approx. 40 hours/week, 16 weeks summer break (64 nights). Overnight stays on state forest sites.

Job Summary

Assist LSRI staff with botanical and aquatic vegetation surveys across multiple state forests in Wisconsin. Conduct fieldwork, record data, operate GPS, camera, and canoe when necessary, and support team operations in remote settings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform botanical surveys at listed state forests.
  • Sample and document aquatic vegetation in Amnicon/Dowling Lake District.
  • Operate GPS units, point‑and‑shoot cameras, and canoe where required.
  • Record observations on data sheets or tablet computers.
  • Support team operations during overnight work weeks.
  • Maintain safety and follow instructions from supervisors and coworkers.
Required Qualifications
  • Student or current employee of the UW system.
  • Valid Class D or higher driver’s license or willingness to obtain University driver authorization.
  • Ability to lift/handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Prepared to work 8‑10 hours per day, flexible hours affected by weather.
  • Ability to work in inclement conditions and remote field settings.
  • Background‑check clearance; meet general HR requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience paddling a canoe.
  • Experience operating a GPS unit.
  • Experience using a point‑and‑shoot camera.
  • Experience recording data on a datasheet or tablet.
  • Strong interest or experience with scientific plant identification.
  • Attention to detail, good communication, and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Experience in a small group, remote or overnight field settings.
