SUMMARYTo provide interpreting services for students who are deaf or whose hearing loss prevents them from having access to their learning without the use of sign language.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Provides educational, social and informational interpreting services for the deaf and hearing impaired students by clearly translating spoken to facilitate communication between those who can hear and those who are deaf or hearing impaired.
- Tutors hearing impaired students utilize a variety of forms of non-verbal and voice communications.
- Reviews, prepares and becomes familiar with subject matter, vocabulary and terms to prepare for upcoming classes.
- Research information to prepare for special assemblies, concerts, plays and/or field trips.
- Uses a variety of modalities and electronic devices such as closed captioning, hearing aids, and assistive listening devices and telecommunications equipment to enhance the understanding of the information being interpreted.
- Coordinates with other staff members providing services to students.
- Establish and maintain good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors.
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Other job related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Completion of an Interpreter Training Program, AND one (1) year of providing instructional interpretation in a school environment.
- Valid CPR First Aid certification.
- Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).
- Principles of sign language interpretation practices, methods and techniques.
- Demonstrating fluency in sign language interpretation in a variety of educational materials and activities.
- Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations and Dysart Unified School District policies and procedures.
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
- Reading and interpreting general documents such as employee handbooks and safety/training manuals.
- Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work.
- Customer service principles.
- Modern office technology.
- Interpreting a wide variety of educational, instructional and social conversations.
- Performing basic original research.
- Maintaining confidentiality.
- Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications.
- Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Light Work :
Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions :
Work is routinely performed in an indoor classroom environment.
