Position Summary

The Nurse Educator is responsible for developing, conducting, and evaluating organizational nurse training programs and new employee orientation (NEO). Conducts group and individual training through in‑service, on‑the‑job training, and computer education modules. Serves as a resource person to staff and management. Performs administrative duties as needed, plans a monthly calendar of education activities, and serves on special committees as necessary. Assists in coordinating and managing the infection control program within the facility and collaborates with nursing leadership to apply infection control to patient access, organizational processes, and capacity.

Knowledgeable regarding patient management and safety.

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise, leadership, management, communication skills, and knowledge of educational principles necessary to develop educational programs and achieve optimal educational outcomes.
  • Develop instructional materials; set up and demonstrate patient care equipment.
  • Conduct educational classes, in‑services, new employee orientation, and/or provide individual instruction as necessary.
  • Facilitate CPR/AED certification courses.
  • Facilitate Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training.
  • Partner with leadership team members to develop, implement and evaluate annual infection prevention goals and action plans.
  • Partner with the Infection Control Specialist to oversee operations of infection prevention, epidemiology, industrial hygiene, and related safety programs.
  • Assist Infection Control Specialist in ensuring appropriate intervention and education occurs with staff regarding healthcare infection trends, outbreaks, or non‑compliance.
  • Create onboarding activities and evaluate new employee’s performance during the conditional period. Provide remedial education and orientation as necessary.
  • Develop objectives for each in‑service and evaluate presentation and teaching material through staff feedback.
  • Interact professionally with the nursing staff and leadership to determine specific educational and/or developmental needs.
  • Document staff attendance at in‑services; ensure educational/competency requirements, organizational requirements and standards are met annually by all nursing staff in collaboration with nursing leadership team.
  • Serve as a resource person, consultant to nursing and medical staff using Policy & Procedure.
  • Identify, develop, coordinate, and plan educational offerings for Behavioral Health personnel, considering mandatory regulations, safety, performance improvement, new equipment, technologies, and clinical practices.
  • Perform other functions as assigned by a registered nurse or the Director of Nursing.

This position has no supervisory or managerial responsibilities.

Work Environment

Indoor environment within inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospital. Staff receives training. Moderate physical activity. Some hazard potential from possibility of physical acting out behavior of patients and health‑related communicable diseases.

Physical Demands

Ability to exercise self‑control in potentially volatile situations; work and concentrate amidst distractions; handle interruptions; move from one task to another; be flexible and not easily frustrated. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp and perceive size, shape, texture. Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken and written communication. Hearing requirements. Perform repetitive motions.

Work is primarily sedentary with occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds.

Qualifications
  • Current and unencumbered RN license in the state of Arizona
  • BSN required; master’s degree preferred
  • Five years of nursing experience; one year in behavioral health environment preferred
