Field/Service Technician
The Senior Field Service Technician will be responsible for installation, commissioning, and start-up of equipment at customer facilities, as well as training end-users, OEMs, and customers in troubleshooting, failure analysis, warranty support, and system optimization. This role supports Power Test dynamometer systems and high-performance engine test equipment, including mechanical, electrical, and controls integration.
This role will actively liaison with the Service team and serve as a technical expert to Engineering, Manufacturing, and Sales, and is responsible for effectively communicating service issues, trends, and opportunities. This position takes on complex service jobs and is expected to deliver quality service quickly and efficiently.
This role is also accountable for efficient field execution, high utilization, and effective knowledge transfer to customers to ensure long-term system performance and customer independence.
Essential Functions- Provide advanced technical assistance, failure analysis, and troubleshooting to customers for all Power Test products, including dynamometer systems and engine test cells.
- Lead installation, commissioning, system integration, calibration, and start-up of equipment, ensuring full operational readiness across mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
- Perform engine dyno testing, performance validation, and system diagnostics on high horsepower diesel and industrial engines.
- Schedule and conduct periodic visits to customers to gather their product concerns and report these concerns in a timely and accurate manner.
- Provide service support by working directly with the customer to resolve technical problems over the phone, via email and in person.
- Draft and provide formal quotes to customers for service and/or parts as required.
- Follow-up on service-related issues needing attention by Power Test and ensure timely resolution.
- Propose information that may apply to possible warranty settlements, root cause findings, and policy adjustments to the Service Manager.
- Submit detailed reports concerning inspections, service work, start-ups, failure analysis, and regional activities. Maintain files inventory of tools, calibration equipment, and training aids.
- Properly document customer interaction, service visits, and expense reports.
- Assist in the development of technical service bulletins, product operation manuals, and other technical publications.
- Provide technical assistance to other functional areas internally to help resolve Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality, Service, Application, and Sales problems as necessary as it affects service.
- Recommend product improvements and influence outcomes positively to the Service team and aftermarket value stream using appropriate channels as voiced by external and internal customers.
- Execute service work with a focus on field efficiency, schedule adherence, and achieving billable utilization targets.
- Deliver structured customer training and knowledge transfer to enable proper system operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Support continuous improvement of service execution by identifying repeat issues, standardizing solutions, and improving first-time fix rates.
- Strong knowledge of engine dyno testing, performance validation, and commissioning processes.
- Experience with high horsepower diesel engines, engine diagnostics, and rebuild/validation cycles preferred.
- Familiarity with dynamometer systems such as Power Test, AVL, or Taylor systems is a strong plus.
- Working knowledge of vehicle drivetrain, hydraulics, and control systems a plus.
- Understanding of accelerator/throttle control systems, voltage/frequency systems, and instrumentation preferred.
