Job Description

Elementary Classroom Teacher Long Term Substitute at Sutton Elementary School (Sutton, Massachusetts), starting June 1, 2026, will teach district-approved curriculum, plan and implement lessons, and create a positive learning environment throughout the school year. The role requires a commitment to equity, anti‑bias practices, and partnership with parents, staff, and community members.

Responsibilities
  • Teach district-approved curriculum, meeting, and instructing assigned classes per schedule.
  • Plan a program of study that meets individual student needs and interests.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to student maturity.
  • Establish and maintain pupil‑teacher relationships and standards of behavior.
  • Participate in curriculum planning, set clear lesson objectives, and guide students toward curriculum goals.
  • Develop instructional materials, lesson plans, and accommodations for diverse learners.
  • Evaluate student progress, adjust activities, and document accomplishments.
  • Identify pupil needs, make referrals, and develop strategies for individual education plans.
  • Assist pupils with academic, personal, and social problems in collaboration with guidance specialists, staff, parents, and outside agencies.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/caregivers via newsletters, notes, phone calls, and conferences.
  • Integrate technology to increase student comprehension and interest.
  • Use school facilities, equipment, and supplies responsibly.
  • Contribute to the operation of the school as a cooperative community.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise classroom and student activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Apply current educational research and theory.
  • Plan and implement lessons aligned with district and school objectives.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Present information and respond to questions from staff, parents, and the public.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret professional literature, journals, and regulations.
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Use reasoning to evaluate information and recommend actions.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Apply evidence‑based research for practice decisions.
  • Maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects.
  • Use instructional technology appropriately and facilitate student use.
  • Perform duties with awareness of district, state, federal laws, and policies.
  • Understand confidentiality requirements regarding student records.
  • Exercise professional judgment in emergencies.
  • Plan, coordinate, conduct, and participate in professional development.
  • Operate computer and related software (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace).
Physical Demands

The employee must be able to remain stationary for extended periods, move throughout the school building as needed, use hands for typing and handling objects, and operate tools. Frequent computer use and standard office equipment (calculator, copier, printer) are required. The employee must enter data, read screens, review materials, and communicate effectively in person and by phone. Visual and auditory awareness is essential for student safety and feedback.

Work

Environment

The employee works in a normal school environment with an acceptable noise level. Interaction occurs with students, parents/caregivers, and staff. The role requires direct responsibility for student safety, well‑being, and work output, with time spent outdoors for fire drills and special activities.

Job Requirements
  • High school or trade school degree preferred.
