Job Description

The Library Instructional Assistant assists in the daily operation of the school library media center by performing a variety of technical and clerical duties, including material circulation, database maintenance, and providing frontline customer service to the school community. Under general supervision, he/she ensures that students and teachers are effective and efficient users and producers of information, provides intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats, offers instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading and information use, collaborates with educators to design learning strategies for individual learners, and manages the operation of the library media center.

PRIMARY

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop a positive climate that encourages students and teachers to make optimum use of the library media center resources.
  • Supervise students in SPP and VHS classes to ensure they remain on task.
  • Takes and records student attendance in iPass for SPP and VHS classes.
  • Check in/out students who have a Flex block.
  • Provide student coverage as needed (includes but is not limited to MCAS, ISS, MS/HS sub coverage).
  • Distribute and collect Chromebooks and chargers from students throughout the day.
  • Monitor students assigned to the Academic Center.
  • Coordinate and organize school work, assignments, and study materials for students assigned to the Academic Center.
  • Ensure student safety and accountability by strictly adhering to established emergency protocols, including fire drills, medical emergencies (MERPS), Stay in Place procedures, and lockdowns.
  • Handle checkout and check‑in of books, media equipment, and other materials using the library's automated system.
  • Sort and reshelve returned materials accurately according to established systems such as the Dewey Decimal Classification.
  • Provide customer service at the front desk, answering routine inquiries and helping students locate specific research or reading materials.
  • Assist students with basic technology needs, including troubleshooting printers, scanners, and computers, and guiding them in the use of online databases.
  • Perform clerical work such as processing new materials (labels and barcodes), maintaining library records, filing, and managing overdue notices and fine collections.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming library space, including creating book displays and monitoring student behavior to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Assist in planning and implementing special programs such as book fairs, reading incentive programs, or library orientation sessions.
  • Promote school‑wide utilization of library media facilities, resources, and services.
  • Inform users of library media center materials.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to help students develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skills in the use of materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Comply with any reasonable oral or written directive of the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
  • Participate in in‑service training programs and/or professional development programs as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Town of Sutton Library Director as needed, and as directed by the Administration.
  • Work with groups of students as requested by administration on academic tasks (including but not limited to study groups and help, work on assignments).
  • Work collaboratively with building administration to ascertain library needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, or their designee.
HOURS

7:00 am to 2:00 pm daily.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Enjoys working with children in a caring and positive school environment.
  • Ability to respond to and address instructional and non‑instructional needs of students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with teachers, staff, and other educational personnel.
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills.
EDUCATION

Minimum of a high school diploma. Previous experience working in public education and with students of the MS/HS age groups.
