Teacher of a substantially separate classroom responsible for developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators to address instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Understand and deliver curriculum area, including determining appropriate entry levels of the MA Curriculum Frameworks.
- Adapt classroom work to provide students with instructional materials addressing individualized education programs (IEPs).
- Develop and understand all IEP processes and procedures.
- Administer developmental testing programs, subject‑specific assessments, etc., to assess student levels, report progress, and/or develop IEPs.
- Complete MCAS Alternative Assessment Submissions when necessary to demonstrate student progress.
- Collaborate with all constituents, including related service providers and instructional assistants.
- Establish strong communication with parents and/or legal guardians regarding expectations, achievements, improvement methods, and reinforcement of classroom goals.
- Develop ABA programs and implement them.
- Apply knowledge of de‑escalation techniques and restraint procedures to provide a safe learning environment.
- Participate in meetings such as IEPs to convey and gather necessary information.
- Collaborate to maximize student growth and outcomes related to IEP goals.
- Prepare necessary documents (adaptive materials, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, behavior logs, etc.) to document progress and meet mandates.
- Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse or substance abuse) to maintain safety and comply with laws and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Special Education.
- Supervise the classroom and students.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education/Special Education.
- Massachusetts DESE licensure for Moderate and/or Intensive Special Needs.
- Experience with developmental testing, IEP administration, and educational assessments.
- Strong collaboration skills with service providers, instructional assistants, and families.
- Effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of Augmentative and Alternative Communication supports.
- Knowledge of de‑escalation techniques and restraint procedures.
- Familiarity with IDEA and state special education regulations (603 CMR 28.00, M.G.L. c. 71B).
- Ability to maintain a safe, clean, healthy, and developmentally appropriate environment.
- Ability to follow all standards and indicators as described in Sutton Public Schools policies and collective bargaining agreements.
- Physical ability to remain stationary for extended periods and use a computer and office equipment.
The employee must remain stationary for extended periods and occasionally move throughout the school building. Regular use of hands for typing, handling objects, and operating tools is required, along with sufficient grip strength. Frequent use of a computer and office equipment is involved. Clear communication, visual and auditory awareness are essential. The employee works in a normal school environment with acceptable noise levels and spends time outdoors for drills or activities.
