POSITION TITLE:
Instructional Assistant
REPORTS TO:
Principal and/or Director of Special Education
SUMMARY:
The Instructional Assistant is responsible for assisting teachers with supporting student growth. The Instructional Assistant provides support for student learning objectives and growth. They will support students during instructional and non-instructional times throughout the school day.
POSITION TYPE:
Full‑time
- Carry out specialized instruction and support to assist the student toward progress on IEP goals and work completion under the direction of the classroom and Special Education teachers in a general education classroom or separate instructional area
- Assist the teacher in data collection on student performance including all IEP goal areas, work completion, and taught skills (grade, work samples observation)
- Establish ongoing communication with the general education and Special Education teachers
- Assist teachers with instructional activities including re‑teaching and remediation as necessary
- Follow teacher directions regarding discipline, turning in assignments, bathroom procedures, and other systems
- Implement a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) if necessary
- Make modifications with teacher direction and/or implement accommodations (assignments, projects, quizzes, tests, etc.)
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and their records
- Assists with the personal needs of students
- Supervises students during play periods, recess periods, lunch periods, and in and out of classrooms
- Provides small group instruction
- Administers tests to individuals or small groups as needed
- Participates in in‑service training programs and/or professional development programs as assigned
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Designated Personnel
- Reports incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to state and federal laws and district policies
- Follows all standards and indicators to the best of his or her ability, as described in the Sutton Public Schools
- Adheres to the voted upon collective bargaining agreement and any applicable MOUs/MOAs between the Sutton Education Support Association and School Committee
Supervise students as assigned.
Qualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, including responding to frequent demands
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work harmoniously and effectively as part of a work team
- Applied Behavior Analysis training desirable
- High School Diploma
- Restraint training beneficial
The employee must be able to remain stationary for extended periods and occasionally move throughout the school building as needed. Regular use of hands for typing, handling objects, and operating tools is required, along with sufficient grip strength for various tasks. The role involves frequent use of a computer and standard office equipment such as a calculator, copier, and printer. The employee must be able to enter data, read from screens, and review handwritten or printed materials, with or without visual aids.
