Summary

Sutton Public Schools is searching for a 1.0 FTE English Language Learner Teacher to begin in the 2026‑27 school year. The ELL Teacher provides direct instruction and support to students whose primary language is not English in grades K–12. The teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, specialists, administrators, and families to ensure multilingual learners develop English language proficiency while accessing grade‑level curriculum and achieving academic success.

Key responsibilities include assessing student language proficiency, developing and implementing individualized language acquisition plans, providing direct English language development instruction, monitoring student progress, maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, and supporting staff in the implementation of effective instructional strategies for multilingual learners. The ELL Teacher serves as an advocate for multilingual learners and helps foster an inclusive educational environment that values linguistic and cultural diversity.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Program
  • Curriculum:
    Know and be guided by the Massachusetts ESL instructional guidelines, the district, and school curriculum guides.
  • Lesson plans:
    Maintain a plan book of daily and unit instruction based on MA ESL guidelines, ACCESS testing results, and student targets.
  • Objectives:
    Establish and communicate well‑defined objectives for each unit of work, including related projects and activities, speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills that are developmentally and linguistically appropriate.
  • Instruction:
    Be responsible for an instructional program and the utilization of teaching methods that consider the individual needs, interests, abilities, and maturity levels of the students. Maintain records that support language acquisition and work with the ESL coordinator to assure alignment to state requirements and data‑driven student targets.
Staff
  • Meetings, Trainings:
    Attend staff meetings and district in‑service training programs.
  • Committees:
    Serve on committees as requested.
  • School

    Activities:

    Be responsible for discharging whatever instructional and non‑instructional school‑related activities may be assigned (e.g., playground, lunchroom, study hall).
  • Supervision, Evaluation:
    Supervise and provide work assignments to teacher assistants and/or student teachers; evaluate their performance when requested.
  • Confer with staff:
    Confer with other staff members regarding student experiences during team planning time; participate in grade‑level conferences as scheduled.
Students
  • Evaluation:
    Evaluate individual student progress on a regular basis and keep requisite records.
  • Reports:
    Provide written student progress reports as required by SEI regulations; coordinate translation when applicable.
  • Health & Welfare:
    Take reasonable measures to assure student health and safety; refer concerns to the principal or designee.
  • Learning Disabilities:
    If suspected, request consultation with specialists and provide a designated program of instruction.
  • Conduct:
    Be responsible for the conduct of students in direct charge and assume authority over other students as warranted.
  • Reinforcement:
    Provide instructional reinforcement as required.
  • Conferences:
    Hold conferences with individual students and parents in the preferred language when necessary.
Operations
  • Policies & Regulations:
    Know and observe the state and district policies and regulations.
  • Attendance & Tardiness:
    Keep records and advise administration of excess absences or tardiness.
  • Injury & Illness:
    Report injuries or illnesses to the nurse.
  • Attendance:
    Report to work daily at assigned times; remain on duty through the contract time.
  • Books & Supplies:
    Account for books and supplies; keep required records.
