The Sutton Athletic Department is seeking a dedicated Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach committed to the technical and personal development of our student-athletes. Unlike the varsity level, the primary focus of this position is developmental growth and teaching the fundamentals of the game. The ideal candidate will prioritize instilling a lifelong appreciation for the sport over winning, ensuring a positive and inclusive environment where players can refine their skills and prepare for future varsity play.
Key Responsibilities- Developmental
Coaching:
Create and implement training programs centered on improving individual technical skills, foundational mechanics, and overall fitness. - Instructional Focus:
Coach players in the core fundamentals, basic strategies, and rules of the sport, emphasizing learning and sportsmanship over winning. - Program Alignment:
Work productively with the Varsity Head Coach to teach and reinforce the program’s overarching philosophy and tactical systems. - Team Management:
Lead all aspects of the Junior Varsity team, including organized practices, games, and team-building activities. - Culture Building:
Foster a team culture that encourages teamwork, character development, and a genuine passion for the sport. - Communication:
Maintain clear and consistent communication with athletes, parents, and staff regarding expectations and player progress. - Academic Support:
Monitor the academic standing of athletes to ensure they maintain a healthy balance between their studies and athletics. - Administrative Duties:
Manage game-day logistics, supervise athletes, and assist the athletic department with equipment maintenance. - Compliance:
Uphold and enforce all school, district, and league policies.
- Experience:
Prior volleyball coaching or playing experience, with a demonstrated ability to teach and mentor younger athletes. - Teaching Ability:
Strong knowledge of the sport’s techniques and a patience for instructional, developmental-led coaching. - Leadership:
Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a coaching staff. - Motivation: A proven ability to inspire athletes to achieve their personal best and find joy in the game.
- Certification: CPR/AED/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the season).
