Primary Responsibilities:

Direct the development, revision, implementation, and continuous quality improvement of a comprehensive and cohesive K-5 program including K-12 vertical progression in language arts in the context of all Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). Oversee the review and development of the AKS curriculum in program area through extensive stakeholder engagement. Implement a process for continuous improvement of the language arts AKS based on student achievement data, benchmarks for excellence, and stakeholder feedback.

Provide for continuity and alignment of the K-5 language arts AKS including K-12 vertical progress. Assure alignment of the language arts AKS with state curriculum, standardized assessment measures, and other external exemplars as appropriate. Lead the development and implementation of long-term goals and plans designed to meet the instructional needs of the students, teachers, and/or teacher leaders of GCPS. Evaluate and identify best instructional practices and programs for achievement of language arts AKS.

Facilitate instruction of the language arts AKS through work with teachers, department chairs, school administrators, central office administrators, and other staff as appropriate Direct a high-performing, growth oriented team in support of the initiatives, priorities, and goals of the department, division, and district. Train, support, supervise, and evaluate personnel in the Language Arts Office, including Language Arts Instructional Coaches, Literacy Instructional Specialists, and Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders.

Provide subject matter expertise on district-wide initiatives including, but not limited to, cross-functional action teams, cross-divisional/cross-departmental efforts, professional learning, and resource development/acquisition. Coordinate with the Accountability and Assessment Office to identify, develop, and maintain appropriate systems for monitoring student achievement of the language arts AKS. Lead a process for evaluating and selecting resources, textbooks, software, and other instructional materials to support instruction of the language arts AKS.

Provide and maintain appropriate resources to schools and teachers for best instructional strategies (i.e. interventions, extensions, and instructional plans). Lead the process for evaluating, selecting, and supporting the implementation of literacy supports in collaboration with Instructional Development and Support and Special Education Lead district efforts to improve student achievement via professional learning, curriculum support, programmatic support, and partnerships with internal/external stakeholders.

Develop, implement, and lead a highly effective professional development program in K-5 language arts for teachers and administrators, based on district goals, data, research, and stakeholder feedback Identify and evaluate current research, content knowledge, and trends in language arts and communicate to internal and external audiences as appropriate. Provide support to local school administrators in the development and delivery of appropriate professional development opportunities in language arts.
