Job Description

Position Overview Swampscott High School is looking for a dedicated Biology/Life Science Teacher to help us uphold our commitment to academic excellence, create meaningful opportunities for students, and strengthen our collaborative school community. In this role, you will design and implement high‑quality, standards‑aligned instruction that meets the diverse needs of all learners within an inclusive environment.

Essential Functions
  • Core Instruction: Teach freshman biology and various life science electives, offering varied and interactive classroom experiences.
  • Co‑Teaching & Inclusion: Collaborate effectively in a co‑teaching model to provide equitable access to the curriculum for students with diverse learning needs.
  • Curriculum Development: Utilize strong curriculum development skills to design authentic, engaging, inquiry‑based units aligned with the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Frameworks.
  • Data‑Driven Learning: Implement data‑informed instructional strategies to analyze student performance and adjust teaching to close learning gaps.
  • Relationship Building: Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom culture; demonstrate a genuine willingness to connect with high school students.
  • Professional Partnership: Work as a flexible and enthusiastic member of the Science Department, contributing to team goals and a collegial work ethic.
  • Communication: Maintain proactive, transparent communication with families regarding student progress and engagement.
  • Consistent Attendance: Maintain punctuality and consistent attendance to ensure instructional continuity and the effective supervision and safety of all students in a laboratory environment.
Required Qualifications
  • Licensure: Valid Massachusetts Educator License in Biology (8‑12) (Professional license status preferred).
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred).
  • SEI Endorsement: Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement required.
  • Technical

    Skills:

    Experience with data‑driven learning platforms and strong academic background in biological sciences.
  • Compliance: Successful completion of a Massachusetts CORI and fingerprint‑based background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching freshman‑level biology and specialized life science electives.
  • Demonstrated success in a co‑taught or inclusive classroom setting.
  • Dual certification in Chemistry (preferred) or ability to lead instruction in Chemistry.
Physical Requirements

This position may require long periods of standing, walking, and sitting; talking or hearing in person and by telephone; using hands to handle, or feel objects or controls; reaching with hands and arms. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The individual may be exposed to ultraviolet lights as are found in computer monitors and copying equipment. The individual may be exposed to various hazards in the building.
