Middle School English Language Learner (MLL) Teacher (ANTICIPATED)

Position Overview
Swampscott Middle School is seeking a dedicated and collaborative Multi-Language Learner (MLL) Teacher with specialized experience in secondary language acquisition. In this role, your primary function will be to design and implement high-quality, standards-aligned English language instruction that accelerates linguistic proficiency and academic growth for a diverse student population.
Because our English learners rely heavily on stable, predictable instructional structures to lower their affective filter and navigate complex academic content, punctuality and consistent, reliable attendance are essential to the success of this role. Essential Functions
Targeted Instruction & Assessment
* Language Delivery:
Provide direct, targeted English language instruction (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) tailored to varying language proficiency levels using evidence-based practices.
* Compliance Assessment:
Administer the annual state-mandated WIDA ACCESS test and utilize the WIDA Screener throughout the academic year to accurately identify student needs and measure growth.
* Curriculum Alignment:
Ensure all language components align with the Massachusetts World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development standards and the state frameworks.
Collaboration & Case Management
* Co-Teaching & Consultation:
Work collaboratively with grade-level content area teachers and special education staff to scaffold content and implement effective instructional accommodations.
* Data-Informed Advocacy:
Prepare and present comprehensive language proficiency data at parent-teacher conferences, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and 504 accommodation meetings.
* Regulatory Compliance:
Maintain, update, and audit official ELL student files and learning plans to fully comply with Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regulations.
* Family Engagement:
Cultivate strong, culturally sensitive communication channels with families/caregivers regarding student language development and academic expectations.
Professional Reliability
* Consistent Attendance:
Maintain punctuality and consistent attendance to guarantee instructional continuity and the effective supervision and safety of all students.
Job Requirements
* Licensure:
Valid Massachusetts Educator License in English as a Second Language (ESL / ELL) at the appropriate middle school grade level.
* Education:
Bachelor's Degree required;
Master's Degree preferred.
* Experience:
Proven experience successfully teaching English language learners at the middle school level.
* Specialized Knowledge:
Demonstrated familiarity with WIDA frameworks, ACCESS data analysis, and SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) instructional models.
* Compliance:
Successful completion of a Massachusetts CORI and fingerprint-based national criminal background check.
