Position: School Nurse (Registered Nurse)

School Nurse

The School Nurse oversees and coordinates the District's school health services and health-related needs. The School Nurse serves as a health care provider, advocate, educator, and consultant, collaborating with students, families, school personnel, physicians, health care providers, and other community agencies to promote the health and well-being of students.

The School Nurse provides nursing services in accordance with the standards of school nursing practice and the Oregon Nurse Practice Act and works to promote student health through prevention, early intervention, management of health conditions, and remediation of specific health concerns. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with District, State, and Federal health-related laws, regulations, and policies.

The School Nurse also supports the District's school-based Medicaid program by ensuring that eligible health-related services are appropriately documented, tracked, and supported for Medicaid reimbursement. This includes maintaining accurate service documentation, verifying required information, collaborating with special education and student services staff, and assisting with compliance requirements related to Medicaid billing.

A Registered Nurse with a bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred. Experience in school nursing, pediatric nursing, special education, or Medicaid-related health services is desirable.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

School Health Services

  • In accordance with the standards of school nursing practice and the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, implement the nursing process to plan and provide individualized nursing care within the school community.
  • Assess student health needs and develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate appropriate health care plans.
  • Provide direct nursing services to students with acute, chronic, complex, and/or special health care needs.
  • Provide nursing delegation, training, and supervision to designated school personnel as appropriate and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and professional standards.
  • Provide training to staff regarding the care and management of students with specific medical needs, including anticipated emergency situations.
  • Attend to ill or injured students and provide first aid and emergency care in accordance with established nursing and first-aid practices.
  • Assume responsibility for appropriate emergency nursing care in the absence of a physician or other medical provider.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and in accordance with District policy, physician orders, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with physicians, parents/guardians, health care providers, therapists, and other professionals to coordinate services for students.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate required health screenings and make appropriate referrals for further medical evaluation or treatment.
  • Support communicable disease prevention and control and implement District procedures regarding exclusion and readmission of students.
  • Monitor health and environmental conditions that may affect student health and safety.
  • Provide health education and health counseling to students, families, faculty, and staff as appropriate.
  • Maintain current health records and documentation for students requiring nursing intervention or health-related services.
  • Cooperatively develop and maintain Individualized Health Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans, 504 Plans, and other health-related plans as appropriate.
  • Participate in case staffing, special education meetings, and the implementation of IDEA services as requested.
  • Assist school personnel in maintaining appropriate health, safety, and sanitary standards within school facilities.

Medicaid Billing And Documentation

  • Support the District's school-based Medicaid program by identifying and documenting eligible health-related services provided to students.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of nursing and other eligible health services in accordance with Medicaid requirements, District procedures, and applicable State and Federal regulations.
  • Review service documentation for completeness, accuracy, required signatures/authorizations, dates, service codes, and other information necessary to support Medicaid reimbursement.
  • Track eligible health services and maintain records necessary to support Medicaid claims and audits.
  • Collaborate with Student Services, special education staff, service providers, and Business Office personnel regarding Medicaid documentation, billing procedures, and compliance requirements.
  • Assist in identifying students and services that may be eligible for school-based Medicaid reimbursement while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Ensure that Medicaid-related documentation is consistent with student health records, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), health plans, and other applicable service documentation.
