Position Summary

As a Protection & Control (P&C) Engineering Specialist II at Oncor, you’ll install, test, troubleshoot, and commission P&C equipment, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and associated communication devices while providing leadership and guidance to other technicians within Oncor and contractors to ensure proper operation of system protection relaying schemes and SCADA systems to eliminate or limit damage, prevent the spread of system disturbances, reduce the number and duration of customer outages, and minimize the probability of an ultimate cascading electrical system blackout.

This role will also aid in the effort to meet Oncor’s financial targets from a construction and commissioning standpoint.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install and supervise the installation/commissioning of protection and control facilities, modify designs as needed, test and calibrate protection schemes and SCADA equipment, and provide direction for the technical aspects of substation construction projects in transmission switching stations, load serving substations, generation switchyards, and interconnection facilities with other companies to ensure appropriate protection and control facilities are installed safely without adversely affecting electric service.
  • Support Construction Management and District construction schedules.
  • Support Transmission Project Management Office (TPMO) by tracking progress, updating, and maintaining construction tools approved by Oncor technology.
  • Assign both Oncor and contract technicians to tasks to develop their performance skills and experience level.
  • Provide direction and dictate the scope of work for construction projects.
  • Manage and submit station outages, prepare/review procedures, and ensure all test data is captured and submitted to maintain compliance and proper commissioning of protective relaying equipment.
  • Develop testing plans and install protective relaying equipment, relaying schemes, associated communication equipment, and SCADA systems to ensure that P&C facilities operate as designed and that system integrity and the reliable and secure operation of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) bulk power transmission grid and the power delivery system are maintained.
  • Monitor and analyze the performance of the protection and control system, analyze digital fault recorder information, investigate questionable operation, troubleshoot and repair the protection and control system, and recommend programmatic solutions as needed to ensure system integrity and the reliable and secure operation of the ERCOT bulk power transmission grid and the power delivery system.
  • Develop written procedures for both Oncor and contract P&C technicians to help ensure that construction activities are conducted safely without unnecessary system exposure, customer interruption, or facility interruption.
  • Provide technical direction to Oncor and contract resources for mobile equipment installation to ensure safe, reliable operation of the transmission system during construction activities.
  • Provide technical direction and perform emergency protection system modifications and high‑voltage switching to restore electrical service without unsafely exposing the electrical system.
  • Actively participate in the technical development of other technicians under their charge.
  • Supervise and provide guidance for multiple groups throughout construction projects.
