Job Overview

Under direction of the Utilities Director to perform activities pertaining to the operation of the meter reading department and reports directly to the customer service supervisor. This position will focus on learning and understanding how to perform a variety of daily operations, including reading water meters and recording water consumption for utility service customers. Also includes the changing out of meters to comply with the ten year change out program, to change out the cut offs to the meters in a “hot” state, dig up and change out meter boxes and to comply with the disinfection process according to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Rules and Regulations.

In addition, the meter reader upon the request of the Customer Service Supervisor will assist in a variety of water office duties. These duties include but limited to edits of the meter reads, understand the billing process and help out the water office with necessary field work. Also new services and disconnects, emergency cut offs, and any other duties as assigned by the Director or the Customer Service Supervisor.

In addition, the meter reader will be expected to work hand in hand with the water office personnel and perform any necessary work requested.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately read water meters on assigned routes, normally at curb and alley locations; accurately record readings on a hand-held data device; make necessary calculations.
  • Check to determine conditions of water meters; report visible meter defects, leaks, and related problems in the form of a trouble code or service order.
  • Check meters that should be off; report any illegal use of water.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of geography, street locations, and meter locations within the City.
  • Duties may include route management, downloading meter reads into accounting/billing system, handling customer complaints, and resolving problems.
  • Prepare necessary reports and records, which include assigning route numbers to new accounts and entering work orders into the computer.
  • Be able to read the meter route within eleven (11) days and then perform necessary maintenance required of the meter readers as discussed in the position summary.
  • Perform as Customer Service Supervisor on an as needed basis.
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Regular attendance.

This is an entry level position; previous experience is not required. Extensive training will be provided within the first year of employment. Continued employment is based on attaining required subsequent licensing. D Water – 12 months & C Distribution Water within 24 months
.

Education/Training

High School Diploma or GED is required.

License or Certificate

Texas D Water license is preferred.

A valid Texas Driver’s License is required.

All state licensed personnel must pass a State of Texas background check. The State of Texas has the authority to grant or deny the required license.

Operation of a computer and software such as word, excel and email.

Operation of handheld data devices and interface with billing/accounting systems.

Operate hand held meter reading device.
