Salary

$36.50 - $58.40 hourly rate. Placement within the salary range is based on relevant work experience, internal equity, and collective bargaining rules for labor union represented positions.

Description

Registered Nurse – Ambulatory Surgery Staff RN in the Surgery Center Pre‑Post‑Operative Recovery Unit (Part‑Time). This role is clinically competent, computer literate, and serves as the primary coordinator for surgical patients, managing the nursing process from assessment to evaluation.

Responsibilities
  • Interview surgical patients, coordinate care, and clear charts for surgery.
  • Develop patient care plans and conduct pre‑op assessments.
  • Implement the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ensure patient safety, reduce errors, and incorporate national patient safety goals.
  • Collaborate with anesthesia to clear patients for surgery.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and the health team.
  • Follow up on patient status and persist in completing required tasks.
  • Apply problem‑solving skills in a respectful, non‑confrontational manner.
  • Use quality improvement data to initiate practice changes.
  • Review pre‑op instructions for next‑day surgeries and obtain required documentation.
  • Provide comfort and safety with appropriate equipment and medications, documented in patient surveys.
  • Maintain records and logbooks per policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Assign pre‑operative arrival times, notifying patients at least one day in advance.
  • Check pre‑op charts for completeness and obtain necessary paperwork.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (minimum), required for all new hires as of 5/2014.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • PALS and ACLS certification within six months of hire.
  • Valid State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse licensure.

Preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic surgical procedures.
  • Effective time management and independent work capability.
  • Organization, prioritization, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Strong critical thinking and decisive judgment.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Previous Epic experience.
  • Triage, critical care, ED, or surgical patient experience.
