POSITION GUIDE TITLE
School Counselors
QUALIFICATIONS- Master's Degree with certification in school counseling by the Alabama State Department of Education
- Prior successful school counseling and/or teaching experience preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Principal and appropriate coordinator of school programs
JOB GOALTo provide essential counseling services for all students, helping them to develop skills and realistic goals in the areas of personal/social growth, educational/planning and career/vocational development.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES- Provides comprehensive, developmental counseling services to all children.
- Assists students in building self-esteem and in developing decision-making, problem-solving and positive human relations skills.
- Assists students in developing skills to understand and to consider their interests, aptitudes and values in planning for their life careers.
- Assists administrators and teachers in removing learning obstacles of students.
- Assists administrators, teachers, parents and students in determining the needs of each student by providing student appraisal services.
- Plans, coordinates and administers the school's testing program.
- Develops and implements a group and individual guidance and counseling program.
- Assists parents, teachers and principal in developing steps for modifying inappropriate behavior of students.
- Consults with administrators, parents, teachers and community resources about the individual needs of students and makes referrals as appropriate.
- Contributes to school's curriculum development by providing pertinent data concerning students' needs.
- Assists teachers in identifying student deficiencies and plans remediation programs.
- Provides orientation for new students and parents.
- Supervises collection and maintenance of appropriate student data.
- Provides placement and follow-up services when possible.
- Helps secondary students plan and annually review programs of study.
- Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating an annual school system counseling and guidance plan in accordance with standards set forth by the State Plan.
- Develops and follows a planned calendar of activities with 85% of time being spent in the provision of direct and indirect services to students, teachers and parents.
- Develops and implements an individualized professional growth plan to remain current in area of counseling.
- Abides by the American School Counselor Association's Code of Ethics.
- Performs other appropriate duties and tasks consistent with the role of counselor as requested by the principal.
- Utilizes the counseling plan of the System and State.
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
