Instructional Assistant

Reports To:

Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)

Job Goal:
To increase the effectiveness of the teacher and assist with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Relieve teacher of non-teaching responsibilities.
  • Participate in in-service training programs.
  • Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Perform clerical work required, i.e., taking attendance, checking out library books, audio-visual equipment, collecting lunch money and tickets, and any other routine book work.
  • Assist teacher with lunchroom, bathroom, playground activities and bus duty as well as field trips.
  • Operate and care for equipment used in classroom instruction and inform principal if equipment is not working properly.
  • Assist teacher with emergency drills.
  • Assist teacher in collecting and distributing books and materials for the classroom.
  • Work with bulletin boards and other classroom displays.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
  • Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  • Assist in administering and scoring of assessment and diagnostic tests for individuals and small groups (K-6).
  • Assist any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Follow a daily schedule as assigned by teacher(s) and approved by principal.

Qualifications:

Must meet State Department of Education Highly Qualified Standards by having an Associates Degree or a minimum of 2 full years of junior college or, pass the Work Keys Assessment for Paraprofessionals. Must be able to work well with youth.

Work Year: 9 months
