Sylva, NC (School of Dental Medicine clinics and Community Service-Learning Centers)
The purpose of this position is to function as a dental hygienist in the School of Dental Medicine clinics and Community Service Learning Centers. This is a part-time, temporary staff role with up to 0.80 FTE. Under the direct supervision of a qualified dentist, the hygienist performs preventive and administrative duties to support patient care.
Responsibilities- Review and revise patient histories and record vital signs.
- Provide preventive dental care including thorough oral prophylaxes (cleanings) with ultrasonic devices, scaling, polishing, and flossing.
- Educate and motivate patients on plaque removal, plaque control, and nutritional guidance.
- Apply topical fluorides and sealants as indicated; take and process study models.
- Explain treatment options to patients and document treatments in patient charts.
- Expose, process, and mount dental radiographs.
- Aid in chair-side assisting as necessary; maintain sharpening, sterilization, and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
- Escort patients to and from operatories; ensure operatories are cleaned and disinfected between patients.
- Maintain patient recall system; participate in staff meetings; assist with front desk duties if necessary.
- Educate and reinforce proper oral health practices with patients.
- Participate in the education of dental students and residents.
- Contribute to a safe and efficient clinic environment and support the objectives of the School of Dental Medicine.
- Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.
