Salary/Wage: $1,199.10 per week. Salary includes designing three productions for the SU Department of Drama per season, and up to three possible Syracuse Stage sound design opportunities per season.

Job Description

Engineer and/or design sound designs and effects for mainstage productions. Supervise the preparation of sound designs for the Syracuse University Drama Department productions. Control all sound-related budgets. Supervise a staff of two assistants.

The description of the position in this document is representative and not exhaustive. Regular collaboration between shops in the production department and the wider organization is expected. Duties and responsibilities may shift with organizational needs. The immediate supervision of this position is the responsibility of the Director of Production Operations.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Work with designers, composers and music directors in the preparation of the sound designs and effects for all Syracuse Stage and Syracuse University Drama Department productions.
  • Assist in the evaluation, selection, and supervision of student designers for Drama Department productions.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all sound booths, offices, studios and storage areas in the Syracuse Stage/SU Drama complex.
  • Maintain and repair all sound equipment, including in-house intercom systems, in the Syracuse Stage/Drama Theatre Complex.
  • Provide rehearsal media and sound effects as requested by the director and/or stage manager.
  • Load-in and strike all sound equipment for Syracuse Stage productions and supervise the load-in and strike of Drama Department productions.
  • Act as Sound Technician for Syracuse Stage productions as needed.
  • Assist in the training of sound running crews for Drama Department productions.
  • Provide sound equipment and operators for auxiliary functions for Syracuse Stage and SU Drama Department.
  • Attend all technical/dress rehearsals and preview performances for Syracuse Stage productions until released by the Director of Production Operations. Provide a qualified representative at all Drama Department technical/dress rehearsals and preview performances.
Qualifications & Key Competencies

The successful candidate may be, or have:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Technical Theatre, Live Entertainment production, or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Sound/Audio design experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work in supervised and unsupervised situations.
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Ability to supervise and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to consistently reproduce tasks and their result.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in and around the theater’s administrative offices, lobbies, and its backstage shops and spaces.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work at a computer or console for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and work at heights above ground, such as lifts and catwalks.
  • Occasional working days of 12-14 hours with appropriate breaks.
