Job Description
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is looking for a part-time instructor to teach COM 300:
Behind the Scenes of Fashion and Beauty in the City during the Maymester 2026 semester (3 credits). The adjunct instructor will teach this 3-credit course Monday-Thursday 10:00am – 4:00pm (May 11 – May 22, 2026);
Additional meetings for field trips possible during the 2026 Maymester for a total of 40 contact hours during that timeframe. This position is based in NYC (classes cannot meet virtually). (3 credits)
This two-week intensive Maymester course is open to rising sophomores interested in a career in fashion and beauty, with a concentration on journalism, strategic communications and visual communications. The course will prepare students to understand the fast-paced world of beauty and fashion via on-site visits and lectures from accomplished industry executives.
This position is located at the Fisher Center, Syracuse University’s consolidated academic campus at 136 Madison Avenue, NY, NY. The expected salary range for this position is $1,700 per credit hour.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Teaching experience is preferred although not required.
The ideal candidate will have a significant amount of professional experience in the fashion and beauty industry. This candidate will also have enough influence and relationships to provide students with opportunities to engage with other fashion and beauty professionals either in a classroom setting or in the workplace. The ideal candidate should have experience working for or with fashion and beauty brands.
Responsibilities- Developing a syllabus.
- Ordering in advance books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes.
- Preparing for classes.
- Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
- Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
- Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
- Ability to hold office hours on campus.
- Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
